Our History: Las Madres of Gilroy

Former Gilroyan, Janet Dolan, started the Gilroy Las Madres organization in the summer of 1976. Dolan missed the closeness of her San Jose Las Madres group when she moved south to Gilroy. From a small beginning, the group expanded, both in membership and goals. Today, there are over 150 members!

Joan Ellenberger, a member of the 1979, 1981 & 1984 groups said, “Just about everyone I know I’ve met through Las Madres. When I came to Gilroy, I didn’t know a soul in town so I sat in my house all summer feeling sorry for myself. Then I saw a notice in the library about Las Madres. I sent in a card and immediately got caught up in the social crowd with my son. I love it.” The same sentiments hold true today. Current President, Jill Wall, shares, “When my first born was 2 weeks old, my family was out to dinner. A woman approached me and offered a business card for Las Madres. I joined and found my village. Almost all of my friends are from this amazing group!”

Las Madres of Gilroy has been an active part of the community for over 40 years. The organization was able to bring a new pediatrician to town and contributed to building Miller park in the 80’s. More recently, the organization has donated toys and funds to local families in need on a yearly basis.

From friendships formed, to the services provided in the community, Las Madres of Gilroy has been a shining example of success for over 40 years!
